Roots & Culture

What Roots?

Two weathered and gnarled Sitka Spruce roots, found in an old forestry plantation where I live on Dartmoor. Invisibly joined, they formed a structure with a hollow in the middle.

What Culture?

For better or for worse, ‘my culture’ involves a lot of plastic tat. My mother used to run a small shop selling all sorts of stuff, and when she closed, I rescued a lot of that stuff from landfill, and which I’ve always liked to use alongside the more natural materials. Mixing up the sacred and profane, you might call it! Here, the crystaline structure is made from plastic ‘crystals’ that are glued in place over a glass bowl – what their original purpose was, I have no idea, but they’ve found a new home here nestled in the roots.
